336 Tons of Custom U-Tubes to Brazil: Five Years of Zero-Error Delivery for a Heat Exchanger Giant
Our client is the largest heat exchanger and equipment manufacturer in Brazil, holding a leading position in oil and gas and heavy machinery, and is also a key partner of the Brazilian government.

I. Project Background: Five Years with Brazil's Largest Heat Exchanger Manufacturer
Our client is the largest heat exchanger and equipment manufacturer in Brazil, holding a leading position in oil and gas and heavy machinery, and is also a key partner of the Brazilian government.
Since the partnership began in 2018, PAC and the client have worked together for more than five years. Heat exchangers are the heart of the petrochemical industry, and U-tubes are their core component. Each year the client buys large volumes of U-tubes and other steel products from PAC. The 336 tons of U-tubes shipped in this order cover a range of advanced materials including 316L, 410, 304L, T11 and S31803 (duplex), with extremely high technical requirements.
II. Core Challenge: Multiple Materials and Zero-Error Custom Bending
Inside a heat exchanger, U-tubes pass through densely packed baffles. The slightest deviation in the bend radius or dimensions of any single tube will prevent the whole unit from being tubed.
- Material complexity: from standard stainless steel to high-temperature T11 chrome-moly steel and highly corrosion-resistant S31803 duplex, the springback, weldability and forming difficulty of each material differ greatly.
- Absolute bend accuracy: the client supplies the drawings directly and requires 100% exact matching, including the bend radius of every tube, with no room for error.
III. On Site: Hard-Core Quality Control (Photo Analysis)
To honour its zero-error commitment, PAC takes inspection to an extraordinary level. The photo set clearly shows our quality control process:
- A truth serum for material identity (Photos 1 and 2): to guard against mixed materials, inspectors use a yellow handheld X-ray fluorescence (PMI) analyser to re-verify 100% of each tube batch. The composition data on screen is checked directly against the standard, ensuring that 316L, duplex and other valuable alloys are never substituted.
- A double safety net where every fraction of a millimetre counts (Photos 3, 4 and 5): precise measurement guarantees a perfect fit:
- Wall thickness: a high-precision micrometre (Photo 3) measures wall thickness at multiple points to ensure pressure rating requirements are met.
- Outside diameter and bend radius: vernier callipers (Photo 4) measure the OD precisely to ensure a perfect fit through the baffles; a large vernier calliper re-checks the special dimensions at the bend.
- Full-dimensional verification: a long tape measure (Photo 5) checks the overall span, bend radius and straight-leg length of the U-tube against the drawing.
- Final gatekeeping for long straight tubes (Photo 6): in the spacious workshop, an inspector in a blue hard hat uses a tape measure to check the straightness and length of long straight tubes laid out on benches (Photo 6). The neatly arranged tubes in the background demonstrate PAC's substantial capacity.
- Mummy-style anti-impact, moisture-proof packing (Photos 7 and 8): high-value bright tubes are most vulnerable to rust and impact in ocean freight. After passing inspection, all formed U-tubes are tightly wrapped in multiple layers of moisture-proof film (Photo 7), then covered with woven bags to prevent scuffing and secured in dedicated wooden crates and pallets (Photo 8). This packing resists high ocean humidity and provides excellent cushioning during forklift handling.
IV. Delivery Results and Client Feedback
This relentless attention to the bend radius and every dimension of every tube is exactly why PAC fulfilled all drawing requirements with no errors.
Over five years the client has rated our product quality extremely highly. This trust, built on absolute quality, has made the partnership stronger over time. PAC is not just a supplier but a stable rear base for the client in global competition.
