Application scope
ASTM A283/A283M specifies carbon steel plates for low-pressure vessels and general purposes, classified into four grades (A, B, C, and D) based on strength. They are typically delivered hot-rolled. The standard specifies the chemical composition and tensile properties for each grade, offering moderate overall strength, good plasticity and weldability. Suitable for welded or bolted connections in low- to medium-load components, it provides an economical plate option for atmospheric and non-critical pressure equipment.
Typical applications
Commonly used for the shells and base plates of atmospheric pressure storage tanks, gas tanks, silos, and storage containers, as well as auxiliary components of noncritical pressure vessels; also widely used in general steel structural components, equipment shells, support base plates, and platforms. Due to its moderate strength, ease of cutting, forming, and welding, it is suitable for load-bearing and enclosure structures with low loads and cost considerations, making it an economical and practical sheet metal in atmospheric pressure storage equipment and general industrial manufacturing.
