Application scope
ASTM A36/A36M specifies carbon structural steel plates for bridges, buildings, and general structures. Similar requirements also cover sections and bars, applicable to load-bearing members that are riveted, bolted, or welded. The standard primarily uses the single grade A36, and the delivery condition is usually hot-rolled. It specifies yield and tensile strength, elongation, and impact toughness, offering moderate strength, good weldability and machinability, and is geared towards general structural steel applications where cost-effectiveness is a priority.
Typical applications
Widely used in steel structural frames of industrial and civil buildings, factory and warehouse skeletons, platforms and stairs, as well as secondary components of bridges; also commonly found in general manufacturing fields such as machine equipment bases, supports, and tank and container shells. With its moderate strength and good cutting and welding performance, it is often used as the basic material for bolted or welded structures, and is suitable for cost-sensitive load-bearing and non-load-bearing components without special low-temperature or high-strength requirements.
